It started out as an innocent gesture. Not that Rodney was going to believe that, but it was the truth. Carson had only intended to show him how to cast properly, how was he supposed to know that wrapping his arms around Rodney was going to provoke a reaction like that.

“Carson…hnn..” The scientist was panting harshly against his lips and Carson imagined that the edge of the small boat’s seat was digging into Rodney’s back. But for once, Carson wasn’t particularly interested in Rodney’s discomfort. Because he was also whimpering and arching underneath him and that was too much of a distraction for the doctor to pull himself together. The sun felt hot on the back of his neck and then his back as Rodney’s hands tugged frantically to rid him of the covering.

As Carson’s hand wandered to his best friend’s hip they both came to a pause. Carson looked down into Rodney’s eyes, this was… life altering. He wouldn’t have it as anything less.

A briefly pained expression crossed Rodney’s face. Carson was confused until he heard the soft curse followed by. “..I’m with someone.. I can’t do this.”

Katie.

Oh, lord. Carson felt himself blush deeply. How could he have completely forgotten that Rodney was seeing Dr. Katie Brown.

“….I don’t think we’re right for each other, you know? Does that make a difference? I mean, in a situation like this, it’s kinda bad, but I really don’t care what people think. I just don’t want to hurt…” Rodney raised his hand to Carson’s face. “I didn’t know you wanted me?” There was a genuine surprise, plus a hint of awe in that.

“You bloody idiot!” Carson laughed and couldn’t resist one final kiss. He’d been in love with Rodney for nearly the entire time he’d known him. “Of course I do.” Reluctantly he drew away from Rodney, despite the protest of every cell in his body.

“If I… when I talk to Katie.” Rodney swallowed heavily and sat up. Looking a little lost, but determined. “She’ll understand, Carson. I mean, it’s you, I wouldn’t do something like this lightly, not for anyone but you. I’ll just have to tell her it’s… over.”

Carson blinked. What was Rodney saying? Was he going to break up with Katie?

“Of course there’s going to be a lot of crying, I mean, you can’t really blame her. And you should think about hiding out for a while. Botanists are vicious, and they like to take revenge.” Rodney makes a face, there’s a story behind that for sure. When he looks back at Carson, there’s a hopelessness. “..but after… all of that is taken care of.. you’re going to? Me and you? …Right?”

“Aye, Rodney.” Carson melts when the arrogant smile returns to Rodney’s face.

It’s then that they get the emergency communication from Atlantis, there was an explosion and they need both Rodney and Carson to cut their vacation short.
